Be Your Best!

“You have the power to affect change, make people listen; what more of the miracle do you want?”

“Not more, just different.”

The Princess Diaries (the movie)

I often find myself asking for different miracles.  I covet the skills and talents that others have.  God has made me realize some things through His Word, my friends and a test I took the other day called the ASVAB test (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery).  My scores weren’t horrible, but they weren’t fabulous either.

I was fine at first, but afterward, I started to get upset.  I kept feeling sorry for myself thinking, I’m not good at anything, and my friends are SO much smarter than me!

I know that I am good  at plenty of things, and that there are  many different  definitions of “smart,” but which one is the right one?

Think of it this way: who decides the standard of normal?  The dictionary defines normal 1) conforming to the standard or common type.  It also defines normal as the usual, average, or typical state.  So, basically, the most people who are the most alike are “normal.”

I think this is how the world got its standard of “smart.”  This world view implies that if you don’t have the same type of knowledge as most people do, then you are not smart. So, if I’m not a super genius at math and science, then I’m not smart?!?  Oh, I don’t think so!!!

If God wanted all of us to be the same and have the same type of knowledge, He would have made us that way!  But did He?  NO!!!  He made us in His image and by His standards, not by what the world thinks!!!  If we were all the same, not only would people be extremely mundane and boring, but we wouldn’t have the challenge of trying to understand each other and learning to respect each other’s views and beliefs!!!  AND, unique and diverse people are evidence of a unique and diverse Creator, God!!!

I LOVE Romans 12:2; it says this, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

It boils down to this: if you are so caught up in the world’s standards, then you are not focusing on the individuality that God has given you!  If you are concentrating on what the world says is best for you, then you’ll totally miss out on what God says is best, which I can promise you is a thousand times better!!!  If you let the world’s standards of smart and normal get in your way, you can’t prove that God’s perfect will is superior!  God has called you to a special plan that is tailor-made just for you, because there is no one else who can accomplish the things you can accomplish!!! There is no other you!!!  Don’t be jealous because you can’t live up to the world’s standards, rejoice because you can live up to God’s standards!

You don’t have to be the best, to be your best!
